Adventure Unlimited Scottish Winter Courses provide the ideal training ground for the Scottish winter novice. Our courses are based in the Cairngorms. If conditions are not suitable we will run courses in Glen Coe. The instructor in charge of the course will liaise with you closely regarding the conditions.
Scottish winter mountaineering is tough physically and mentally, and a good level of fitness is needed to undertake these courses.
The Winter Skills programme is aimed at people who have little or no winter experience. This course will prepare you for the more serious world of winter walking, but is also suitable if you are planning your first trip to the Alps. The 3 day course will cover the following topics: risk assessment, winter equipment, planning and preparation, the use of ice-axes and crampons, avalanche awareness, emergency self arrest, safety on snow, winter navigation and mountain weather, construction of emergency shelters, and rope work. By the last day of the course we will endeavour to undertake a winter ridge or gully at Scottish Grade I.
*Please note courses need a minimum number of participants in order to run.
