Ski Touring combines the skills of skiing and mountaineering to take you into the heart of the mountains. Away from the lift systems, we have all the challenge of the mountains: the fitness needed to walk uphill, extra skills to climb up as well as ski down, navigation, avalanche awareness... and with those challenges are the rewards - skiing above the clouds in a remote environment, the fresh tracks leading from the top of the mountain, and the welcome beer in an alpine hut after a full day in the mountains.
This introduction to ski touring is aimed at people who can ski good parallel on a red piste, and have some previous experience of off piste skiing. The itinerary is subject to conditions, weather and skiing ability but normally runs like this:
Day 1: Intro to off piste technique, avalanche transceiver exercises
Day 2:Reinforcement of off piste ski technique, introduction to skinning uphill
Day 3:Day tour in the Chamonix area
Day 4: & 5Overnight stay in a mountain hotel/refuge, usually away from the Chamonix area
Day 6:Either extend to a 3 day tour or return to Chamonix for a run down the Vallee Blanche, depending on weather.
Course ratio: Up to 6:1
*Please note courses need a minimum number of participants in order to run.
